OnePlus 9RT 5G
OnePlus 9RT 5G has a good in-hand feel despite its hefty 198.5g weight. The rounded edges of the aluminum frame make it comfortable to hold. It has a relatively large 6.62–inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a Full–HD+ resolution. The second big change lies in the performance of the phone. The OnePlus 9RT 5G uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC making it equal to the OnePlus 9. OnePlus has even tweaked the touch response of the 9RT’s screen, which can boost to 600Hz (from 300Hz) in certain games.
The in-display fingerprint sensor is lightning-quick at authentication, and navigating the phone’s menus is quick. Switching between apps was also seamless and it never felt like I was stressing this phone, no matter what I did. The 4,500mAh battery lasted for 20 hours and 16 minutes in our internal test, which runs an HD video clip on a loop till a phone shuts off. The camera app on the 9RT has been lifted straight from sister company Oppo’s ColorOS. The image quality is good but low-light performance could have been better.

OnePlus 9RT 5G Design
The OnePlus 9RT has a design that will really make you go wow! It stands out and that’s mainly due to how good its Matte finish looks and feels. This Oneplus’ is second-generation frosted glass, and it’s proper jet black with a cool glimmering effect. The 9RT has the iconic alert slider. The next upgrade of the OnePlus 9RT 5G comes in the form of 5G bands. It has eight 5G bands. So it’s great for people who want more 5G bands. The phone is available in colors Hacker Black, Nano Silver, and Blue. It does not have any official waterproof rating. A trade-off for its price in Kenya is something you can live with.
Cameras
Another upgrade comes in the form of the main camera of the OnePlus 9RT 5G. There is also a 16 MP, f/2.2, 14mm, 123˚ (ultrawide), 1/3.6″, 1.0µm camera and a 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). The highlight is its 50 MP, f/1.8, 24mm (wide), 1/1.56”, 1.0µm, PDAF, and OIS camera. An IMX 766, which is something we had seen in the OnePlus 9 Pro in 2021. Oneplus 9 lacked something which 9RT brings. This OIS is on the main camera. The photos taken at the 9RT are clearly a good upgrade. Some photos do have a bit of saturation, but they’re just more pleasing with better highlights and better shadows.
Platform
Oneplus 9RT comes with Android 11 out of the box. Look, this is strange because, at a time when Android 13 rumors are in the headlines, it would have been great to see Android 12 here. Anyway, there are confirmed two years of major updates and three years of security patches. The likes of the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE, which is a premium phone in this segment came with the latest Android 12 update onboard. Anyway, this phone has Oxygen OS 11 which does look so much like ColorOS 12. Or is it just ColorOS 12?
Another upgrade of the OnePlus 9RT is the chipset since it comes with a Qualcomm SM8350 Snapdragon 888 5G (5 nm) chipset. Onboard is a whopping 12 GB RAM up to 256 GB of storage. And 9RT has fixed the thermal issues of its SD 888.
Fluid AMOLED display
Now OnePlus 9RT’s displays are 6.62 inches Fluid AMOLED panels with a 1080 x 2400 resolution. With it, you get a super-fast 120 Hertz refresh rate and 240 Hertz touch sampling rate. Because of these touch sampling rate features, moving elements on the screen appear even smoother than what you’d get on a 60 or 90-Hertz panel. This screen is more responsive too. Max brightness is good too up to 500 nits with the manual slider and over 800 nits in auto mode when in bright conditions.
A strange yet somewhat necessary feature is present with this display though. It will normally dial back to 60 Hertz after you stopped touching it. But if brightness is below 50% or you have a dark mode on, it will maintain a steady 120 Hertz refresh rate. This AMOLED display of the 9RT is amazing nevertheless. With it, you get good colors that are very accurate. The OnePlus 9RT 5G has a display that is good. It’s nice and vibrant, and it just looks good without any issues.
Audio quality
For audio, you get a set of stereo speakers. They are the bottom speakers and the earpiece acts as the second one. However, there is no 3.5-millimeter jack here. The audio quality from the speakers is pretty nice. Waking up and unlocking the phone is done with an under-display optical fingerprint reader. It’s super fast and responsive to your touch.
Battery
The battery of the OnePlus 9RT 5G is a Li-Po 4500 mAh, non-removable with a 65W charger in the box. It isn’t something one should worry about because it is great as well. One way in which the OnePlus 9R pushes things to the next level is with fast charging 65W, 1-100% in 39 min (advertised). It comes with a huge 65-watt adapter in its box as you will find when you unpackage this brilliant smartphone.
Our take
This OnePlus 9RT is replacing not one, but two, Oneplus phones. The OnePlus 9R, obviously, and it’s also replacing this with the OnePlus 9. To put it simply, this phone fixes “all” the issues in the Oneplus 9 and 9R. It basically brings good upgrades to the 9r while being better than the 9. The 9RT 5G actually kills both the 9 and 9R. It brings some really good upgrades with a nice and looking design, a more powerful chipset, and a better main camera. It also has a metal frame, more optimized performance, OIS in the main camera, and way more 5G band.
